Canha back, Decker cut

The A’s recalled right-handed-hitting outfielder Mark Canha on Tuesday and designated lefty-hitting outfielder Jaff Decker for assignment.

Canha, who was 2-for-19 in his first stint with Oakland after missing almost all of last year because of hip surgery, hit five homers and drove in 16 runs in 19 games at Triple-A Nashville. He also walked 10 times while batting .232.

“The intent when we sent him down was just to get some consistent at-bats,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We know Mark’s going to do some damage.”

Decker, a good defensive outfielder, hit .400 over his first five games with Oakland but was in a 4-for-35 slide. “Decker did a good job for us in the time we needed him to,” Melvin said. “He was leading off for a while and doing really well.”

The move leaves the A’s without a true backup center fielder behind Rajai Davis, but Canha played there during the spring and started three games in center with Nashville. Manaea, Bassitt update: Left-hander Sean Manaea ,on the DL with shoulder tightness, threw four innings in a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville and allowed four hits and two runs, one earned. He walked one and striking out five. He threw 72 pitches. Manaea is likely to come off the DL to start early next week.

Chris Bassitt, returning from Tommy John surgery, followed Manaea and worked four innings. Bassitt allowed five hits and four runs. He walked four and struck out six. Briefly: Daniel Mengden, recovering from preseason foot surgery, hit 95 mph in his rehab start Monday, according to Melvin . ... Melvin said that Josh Phegley is likely to come off the seven-day concussion DL when eligible before Friday’s game if all continues to go well . ... Melvin said it is still unlikely the A’s would keep three catchers on the roster when Phegley returns; that would mean a return to Nashville for Bruce Maxwell.
