A hard shot in the kisser

- By Henry Schulman

Christian Arroyo’s 21-yearold legs came through Friday night’s 17-inning game just fine. His face? Not so much.

As the Giants mobbed Buster Posey at the plate after his game-ending homer, Arroyo took a direct shot to the mouth from Jeff Samardzija’s elbow.

Both players laughed about it before Saturday’s game, particularly Samardzija, who did not know he winged the future of the franchise until he was shown the video.

“Oh, dude, that hurt, like a lot,” Arroyo said. “All I remember was I was going into the pile and an arm drilling me in the mouth. I came in here and had a piece of skin hanging from my lip.”

Arroyo was not in Saturday’s lineup, but not because of Samardzija’s accidental shot. Manager Bruce Bochy wanted to rest Arroyo on Friday night but changed his mind, probably because Hunter Pence had to sit with a tight left hamstring. Arroyo popped out as a pinchhitter Saturday.

Pence was not in the lineup Saturday either but believes he should be back for Sunday’s game against the Reds or Monday’s against the Dodgers.

Posey got a well-deserved

day off, too. Asked how he felt after the marathon win, he said, “I feel like I caught 17 innings less than 12 hours ago.”

Bumgarner assist: Justin Ruggiano, who homered to center Saturday, was stunned to hit one nearly as hard in the 16th inning of Friday night’s win only to see it caught at the wall. Ruggiano grabbed his helmet in disbelief.

Madison Bumgarner lightened the mood in the dugout when he told Ruggiano, “I know if I threw that pitch it would have been a home run.”

Ruggiano has hit three homers off Bumgarner, his most against any pitcher. When Ruggiano arrived at spring training he said he was a little afraid to razz Bumgarner about his success.

Now? Ruggiano smiled and said, “He and I have talked a lot.” Briefly: Lisalverto Bonilla lost a complete game in his first big-league start since 2014. … Michael Morse’s leadoff single, pinch-runner Gorkys Hernandez’s steal and Kelby Tomlinson’s two-out infield hit produced an insurance run in the seventh. … Umpire Tony Randazzo, who left Friday’s game with a concussion, will miss about a week, umpiring supervisor Ed Montague said. Randazzo will be examined by a doctor in Phoenix on Monday. … Brandon Belt’s splash homer was his sixth and the 72nd by a Giant.
