Kayaking From Sausalito

-

What you’ll see: There is no faster way to transform your world than to jump in a kayak and take a few paddle strokes. For many, the best place to do that is out of Sausalito at Sea Trek, on the calm waters of Richardson Bay. On the best days, the ambitious can make the 2-hour paddle (shorter for some) to the Golden Gate Bridge or across Raccoon Strait to Angel Island.

Location: Sea Trek is near the Sausalito waterfront, based out of the Bay Model.

My favorite trip: On a magic spring day, Sea Trek owner Bob Licht and I paddled from Sausalito out Richardson Bay, across Raccoon Strait and then into Ayala Cove at Angel Island. From there, I met up with a few friends, rented bikes and rode Perimeter Road. We then locked up the bikes and hiked to the top of Angel Island for the 360degree view of the bay, Golden Gate, San Francisco and dozens of other landmarks. For a combination adventure, kayak-bikehike, this is a Bay Area must-do.

Rentals/programs: Available to rent are sit-on-top kayaks, closed-shell kayaks, both singles and doubles, and stand-up

paddleboards. Youth programs, guided trips and lessons are available.

Rental prices: $25 per hour for a single kayak; $40 per hour for a double; $150 for 10 hours of cumulative rental time; $45 membership per month for unlimited personal rentals.

Guided trips: Sausalito Take The Kids (3 hours), $75 per adult, $60 for children; Paddle the Golden Gate and back (4 hours), $85 per adult; Angel Island round trip, $95.

A little bit of history: Sea Trek opened in 1982 and was the first sea kayak rental service in California; 20 kayak rental locations are now available in the region.

Bay Model: The Bay Model is a working model of the bay-delta area, roughly 100 yards long, which shows the flows and simulates tides and currents from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta through Suisun, San Pablo and San Francisco Bay and out the Golden Gate. Admission free. Open Tuesday through Saturdays, closed Sundays, Mondays. Visitor Center, (415) 332-3871.
