Herbert Marshall Vogler died on April 10, 2017 after a brief illness. He was born on May 6, 1935 in San Francisco, the first son of Herbert G. and Rachel Vogler. His childhood was spent in San Francisco, attending elementary school and high school (Polytechnic) where he was President of the Senior Class. He enrolled at UC Berkeley and then went on to UCSF Medical School. Herb’s lifelong friend Jules Bank accompanied him on this long educational venture.

While in Medical School, he met his wife Audrey and they were married in 1958. His internship at Santa Clara County Hospital was made happier by the birth of their first daughter Erika. His Internal Medicine residency was interrupted by the building of the Berlin Wall and his being drafted into the Air Force. The family was soon sent to Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where their second daughter Karen was born. Then back to Santa Clara County Hospital to finish his residency where their son Kurt was born. In 1966, Herb was assigned to RAF Lakenheath in England, near Cambridge. After three years in England, during which the family enjoyed many adventures, including trips to Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, Italy and Majorca, the family moved back to San Jose where he entered private practice with George Gordon, Jim Brown, and Arne Jensen. He practiced medicine for forty-two years, was interested and studied all aspects of the field, and made many good friends among colleagues and patients. He retired in 2011.

Herb was deeply devoted to his family. Over the many years, the Vogler family, including Karen’s daughter Elora, Kurt’s wife Susi, daughter Fiona and son Lars, had many trips together to beloved locations like Lassen National Park and especially DL Bliss State Park on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. His approach to nature was profoundly impacted by the Blister Rust control he did during the college summers he spent with the Forest Service.

Herb will be sorely missed for his intellect and wit. His interests were wide-ranging, from astronomy, trains, geology, history, both ancient and modern, maps, especially USGS, music (Bach to Bob Scobey and Dixieland), photography, The Goon Show with Spike Milligan and Peter Sellars, Monty Python, movies, and hiking and camping at Lake Tahoe. He was also a long-suffering Cal Bear fan who never saw the Golden Bears return to the Rose Bowl.

Herb is survived by his wife Audrey, his three children Erika, Karen and Kurt, grandchildren Elora, Fiona and Lars, his brother Detlev, as well as his many nieces and nephews.

A private memorial will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, Save the Redwoods League, Public Broadcasting, or a charity of your choice.
