A person of interest in the mysterious case of a missing 46-year-old San Francisco man is believed to have fled the country right as he was set to speak to investigators about the disappearance, police said.

Bob Tang, 48, was scheduled to be interviewed by detectives Tuesday about the disappearance of Piseth Chhay, an Uber driver who was last seen May 14, said Officer Grace Gatpandan, a San Francisco Police Department spokeswoman.

Tang, a family friend who police believe was the last person to see Chhay and “may have knowledge of his whereabouts,” didn’t arrive for the talk with investigators, Gatpandan said.

Police believe Tang may have fled to his home country of Cambodia. His car was was found Thursday at San Francisco International Airport, police said.

Tang’s disappearance further complicates the search for Chhay, who vanished on Mother’s Day and has prompted a sweeping search by anguished family and friends. Chhay’s car was later found abandoned near a homeless encampment in the Bayview, KGO-TV reported.

Chhay’s family has been circulating missing-person flyers around the city and on social media.

Tang was last heard from Monday, when he left his San Francisco home after being contacted by an alarm activation at another home in Antioch. He has not been seen since then.

Tang was described as 5-foot-4, weighing 130 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

Authorities, meanwhile, have been executing search warrants in San Francisco and Antioch in search of evidence related to Chhay’s disappearance.
