Dufner, Lingmerth share Memorial lead

-

Jason Dufner putted for birdie on every hole until he bogeyed No. 18 at the Memorial on Thursday, carding a 7-under-par 65 to tie David Lingmerth for the firstround lead at the PGA Tour event in Dublin, Ohio. They were one shot ahead of Jordan Spieth.

Lingmerth, whose first PGA Tour victory came at the Memorial two years ago, also bogeyed his last hole.

Daniel Summerhays joined Spieth at 66, and Justin Thomas and Lucas Glover were at 67.

Starting quickly at the Memorial is not new for Dufner. He opened 66-67 two years ago before fading on the weekend. Last year, he opened with a 68.

“I can put a couple of rounds together here,” Dufner said. “But I’m looking for more than that this week. Hopefully, we can keep it going for four.”

At No. 18, Dufner hit a 7-iron and came up short, his shot landing in a bunker. He blasted out 12 feet by the hole and missed his par putt.

“I’m OK,” Dufner said. “I’ll get over it.”

In Malmo, Sweden, Renato Paratore and England’s Max Orrin each shot a 5-under 68 to tie for the first-round lead at the European Tour’s Nordea Masters.

Jamie Donaldson and Bradley Dredge were 4-under, one shot clear of Benjamin Hebert, Eddie Pepperell and Li Haotong.

Roberto De Vicenzo, known as much for a scorecard error at the Masters as his British Open victory that made him the first Argentine to win a major, has died. He was 94.

Mr. De Vicenzo died Thursday. The Argentina Golf Association confirmed his death on its website. It said Mr. De Vicenzo broke his hip last month at his home in Buenos Aires, and his health had been deteriorating since then.

Mr. De Vicenzo amassed 230 titles worldwide, mostly in South America, but achieved fame on the biggest stages. He outlasted Jack Nicklaus to win the 1967 British Open for his only major title. But even Mr. De Vicenzo could not forget the 1968 Masters, when he inadvertently signed for a higher score. Instead of a playoff, Bob Goalby was the winner.
