U.S. into under-20 World Cup quarters

Josh Sargent scored in the 32nd minute to start the United States on its way to a 6-0 win over New Zealand at the Under-20 World Cup in Incheon, South Korea. The Americans advanced to a quarterfin­al against Venezuela.

Goals by Jeremy Ebobisse in the 64th minute and Brooks Lennon 87 seconds broke open the game. Justen Glad scored in the 76th, Auston Trusty in the 84th and Lagos Kunga in the third minute of stoppage time.

Cal alum Alex Morgan is a champion in Europe as Lyon beat French rival Paris Saint-Germain on penalties after playing to a 0-0 tie through regulation and overtime to claim a record-equaling fourth Women’s Champions League title in Cardiff, Wales. Morgan, who has a hamstring injury, started for Lyon but was forced off in the first half.

Swimming: Stanford’s Katie Ledecky won the 1,500-meter freestyle in 15 minutes, 35.65 seconds — nearly 40 seconds clear of the field — at the Pro Swim Series in Santa Clara, which runs through Sunday.

Baseball: Cal first baseman Andrew Vaughn, who hit .349 and tied teammate Denis Karas for the conference lead in home runs with 12, was named the Pac-12’s Freshman of the Year.

Basketball: Diana Taurasi hit eight three-pointers, giving her a WNBA-record 914, and scored 37 points as the Phoenix Mercury beat the host Chicago Sky 99-91. Taurasi, who entered the game tied with Katie Smith with 906 threes, broke the mark early in the first quarter.

Jack McCloskey, the general manager who built the Detroit Pistons’ “Bad Boys” title winners, has died. He was 91.

The Pistons said Mr. McCloskey died in Savannah, Ga. He had fought Alzheimer’s disease.

Football: Baltimore Ravens cornerback Tavon Young, who started 11 games as a rookie last year, has torn his ACL and is probably lost for the 2017 season. He was hurt at practice when he tried to get to his feet after an intercepti­on.
