Cubs’ Russell says abuse claim false

-

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell on Thursday denied an online accusation that he has abused his wife.

Russell’s wife, Melisa, posted a photo Wednesday on Instagram with a caption suggesting he was unfaithful to her. In another post, a user named @carlierreed — described by Melisa Russell as a close friend — accused Addison Russell of “mentally and physically abusing her.” The posts have been deleted.

Addison Russell issued a statement Thursday that said: “Any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful. For the well-being of my family, I’ll have no further comment.”

Major League Baseball spokesman Patrick Courtney said baseball is looking into the situation.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said he found out about the accusation during Wednesday’s game against the Marlins. Epstein and manager Joe Maddon met with Russell, who was given the night off Thursday.

“It’s a very serious allegation, and it’s something we had to deal with immediately,” Epstein said.

Briefly: Astros left-hander Dallas Keuchel, scratched from Wednesday’s start against the Royals, was placed on the 10-day disabled list with neck discomfort. He was also on the DL from May 15-26 because of the condition. “I’m not sure what goes into these pinched nerves,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “If he misses one start, great. If it’s more than that, then it is what it is.” ... Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks was placed on the DL because of tendinitis in his pitching hand.
