Mary Macaulay Israel
Died peacefully at home in Albuquerque, NM May 30, 2017. Mother of Thomas M. (Ann Ramenofsky) Wood. Grandmother of Benjamin (Chelsea) Wood and Katherine Wood. Welcomed great-granddaughter Orli Marion (Ben and Chelsea) on May 1, 2017. Preceded in death by brother Edward C. Macaulay; survived by his children, Peggy, Susan, and Edward W. (Janis) Macaulay, and five first cousins.
Mary was born March 20, 1929 to Pauline Wilkinson and Edward L. Macaulay in Berkeley. She attended Berkeley public schools and Stanford University (class of 1951). At Stanford she met Thomas F. Wood, of Tulsa, OK; they were married in October 1951. A Second Lieutentant, USA, he was killed in action, Korea 1953.
She married Lon F. Israel, electrical engineer and principal of the computer peripheral company Qume, in June 1964. They traveled for business and pleasure, most often to England, and lived in Etna, CA; Gardnerville, NV; Orinda; and Walnut Creek. Lon died in May 2011.
Mary loved gardens and wildflowers. She was a skilled seamstress, and donated much of her work to charitable organizations. Her lovely piano playing enhanced holiday gatherings. She was an avid reader and stamp collector, and was a generous supporter of many museums and environmental groups. At her request, no services will be held; donations may be made in Mary’s name to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Foundation.
