Forgotten feminist
Regarding “On putting women on a pedestal” (Heather Knight, June 16): One longforgotten feminist who should be honored with a statue in San Francisco is Clara Foltz. In the late 1870s, Foltz became the first woman admitted to practice law in California, after successfully suing to attend law school here. She also was the first woman to run for governor in our state and was a staunch advocate for the right of women to vote. Of course, there are many other excellent candidates mentioned by columnist Heather Knight (such as Ruth Asawa and Lillie Hitchcock Coit), but I just wanted to place Foltz’s name “on the ballot.”
