Oakland police have lost trust
Regarding “Oakland recruiting ex-cons to oversee cops” (Matier & Ross, June 14): If the Oakland Police Department was sincerely concerned about who was overseeing their conduct, perhaps they should have properly complied with the 2003 Riders settlement, or policed themselves sufficiently to not get wrapped up into an underage teen sex scandal last year.
As it stands, the people of Oakland overwhelmingly passed Measure LL as their only recourse after two decades of police misconduct and governmental inaction. Public servants require public trust, and OPD has a “lot” of work to do if they want to earn it back. Adam Flynn, Oakland
