Kerr to keep seeking solution to pain

Shortly after arriving in San Diego on Friday, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr swam in the Pacific Ocean.

“Saltwater therapy,” Kerr said in a conference call with reporters Monday.

Over the last four games of the NBA Finals, Kerr managed his head and neck pain well enough to coach from the bench. Now, during an important offseason, he is turning his focus back to finding a permanent solution to the complications from back surgery that have plagued him for two years.

Though Kerr declined to provide specifics, he said he plans to spend coming weeks traveling the country and, if necessary, the world, to look into potential answers.

“There’s a lot of different thoughts on ways I can see some improvement,” said Kerr, who missed 11 playoff games to tend to his chronic pain. “I’m seeing various people, and I’m trying to really get some traction early in the summer. The good news is I feel a lot better compared to where I was six weeks ago.

“I feel like I’m making strides, but I definitely want to (gain) some momentum early this summer, build on that momentum and feel a lot better.” Kerr, who has said he intends to coach Golden State “for a long time,” will balance his search for answers with his obligations to the team, including Thursday’s draft, next month’s freeagency frenzy and the NBA summer league in Las Vegas.

“Obviously, (general manager) Bob (Myers) and I will be talking every day,” Kerr said. “We have a pretty good idea of what we’d like to do (in free agency). I’ll be by Bob’s side and ready to help him out any way I can.”
