James Blake

The retired tennis player won’t sue New York after he was mistakenly arrested and roughly tackled by police in 2015. Instead, the city will fund a legal fellowship in his name at the city’s police watchdog agency, the Civilian Complaint Review Board. “It has been my intention since day one to turn a negative into a positive, and I think this fellowship accomplishes that goal,” Blake said. Mayor Bill De Blasio agreed: “Transparency and accountability are critical to further strengthening the bonds between law enforcement officials and the communities they serve. The James Blake CCRB Fellowship is rooted in this administration’s deep commitment to improving those relations.”

Victoria Azarenka

The former top-ranked woman made a winning return to tennis after a year out to have a baby — but had to save three match points to beat Japan’s Risa Ozaki 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7) in a first-round match at the Mallorca Open in Spain. The match started late Tuesday but was halted by darkness. “There were a lot of ups and downs, good shots and then easy mistakes. That’s something to expect after a long break, but definitely something I need to work on,” Azarenka, 27, said. A two-time Australian Open winner, Azarenka announced in July that she was pregnant and would step away from the courts. She gave birth to a boy, Leo, in December.
