Getting around on Pride weekend
San Francisco Pride, one of the world’s largest such celebrations, officially starts Saturday with a rally at Civic Center Plaza at noon.
Preparations have been long in the making for the 47th annual weekend of pride, with more than 1 million people expected to gather in the city from around the Bay Area and from across the world. If you can’t walk or bike to the celebrations, public transportation is the way to go. Consider purchasing a weekend pass from BART, Muni or Caltrain to beat long lines at congested ticket machines. Here’s what else you need to know: How to get there: BART trains will operate on regular schedules, but the transit agency will provide longer trains Sunday in an effort to accommodate the throngs of parade-goers. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at Market and Beale streets, and the celebration is expected to last until 7 p.m.
In San Francisco, Muni will run on Sunday extra service on the K, L, T and M Metro lines. Several street closures in the city will impact bus service. The closest station to the start of the parade route is Embarcadero Station.
Caltrain will run two special express trains departing from San Jose at 7:55 a.m. and 8:55 a.m. Sunday, followed by several extra trains throughout the morning and early afternoon that will depart from San Jose and Palo Alto. Caltrain also will add service in the evening to accommodate crowds. Street closures:
Expect difficulty navigating San Francisco’s crowded streets in a car. Parking will be even more limited than usual, and there are a number of city streets, including Market and streets around the Civic Center, that will remain closed throughout the weekend.
