Sofia Coppola lets women propel the story in her remake of ‘Beguiled’

When Sofia Coppola said early in her career that she would never do a remake, she wasn’t only lobbing an implied criticism at Hollywood’s play-it-safe obsession with reboots. (This summer alone, more than a dozen franchise remakes and sequels will have hit screens, for better or worse.)

Coppola, who in May became only the second woman in the Cannes Film Festival’s 70-year history to win the best director award — for a remake of “The Beguiled” — was making a point about the sanctity of an artist’s work. It’s an opinion befitting the daughter of one of this country’s most famous auteurs.
