NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
1 Severe storm:
Floodwaters from Tropical Storm Cindy covered timberland and fields across the rural Deep South on Saturday, but the sun peeked out enough to offer hope that the worst is over. Swollen by heavy rains and flowing quickly, the Chickasawhay River was out of its banks near the Mississippi town of Leakesville and nearly 9 feet above flood stage with the water still rising. An abandoned bridge spanning the river collapsed earlier last week. The National Weather Service said the Mississippi coast received nearly a foot of rain over a four-day period ending Saturday, the most in the region.
2 Plane crash:
A small plane crashed into an empty day care building in Fort Myers, Fla., on Saturday, killing one person and injuring another. The crash caused extensive damage and a fire. The Lee County Sheriff ’s Office said the Piper aircraft went down shortly after it took off from a nearby airfield. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash. Authorities said one person was killed and another was taken to the hospital with injuries. Federal aviation authorities will assist with the investigation.
3 Wedding bells:
President Trump and first lady Melania Trump were among the guests as Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin married Scottish actress Louise Linton Saturday night in Washington. Vice President Mike Pence also attended. Mnuchin, 54, worked for the Goldman Sachs investment firm for nearly two decades before founding a hedge fund. He also ran a company that invested in Hollywood movies and was finance chairman of Trump’s presidential campaign. Linton, 36, has appeared in movies and TV shows. This is Mnuchin’s third marriage and the second for Linton.
4 Child deaths:
A Texas woman was being held Saturday on two counts of causing serious bodily injury to a child after she told investigators that she left her 2-yearold daughter and 16-month-old son in a hot car where they died last month, according to sheriff ’s officials. Cynthia Marie Randolph, 24, told investigators that she found the kids playing in the car and when the 2-yearold refused to get out, she shut the door to teach her a lesson, thinking her daughter could get herself and her brother out of the vehicle when ready. Randolph said she went back into her house near Fort Worth, smoked marijuana and took a nap for two or three hours, the complaint states. When she woke up and went to check on the children, they were unresponsive.
5 Sequoia moved:
A cherished sequoia that has grown in Boise, Idaho, for more than a century from a seedling sent by noted California naturalist John Muir has been uprooted. The tree was poised Saturday to travel about two blocks to a new location. David Cox of tree-moving company Environmental Design said the 10-story, 800,000-pound sequoia will be moved on inflatable rollers. St. Luke’s Health System in Boise is paying $300,000 to move the tree to make room for an expansion. Cox said if everything goes as planned, the sequoia should be at its new home on city property around noon Sunday.
