Paul Douglas Kase was born a curious redhead in April 1935 to Mildred and Frank in San Francisco. Paul was a big brother to Nancy and was raised in Oakland, where he lived until moving to Moraga in 1981. After attending San Francisco State, Paul married Rose Ann Parella in 1958 and together they became parents to David and Kathleen. The family enjoyed road trips to National Parks and vacationing in Lake Tahoe.

Paul’s professional career began as an executive with Ames Mercantile, then with Castle & Cooke, and later he served as Chairman of Wherehouse Entertainment Corporation. Other business opportunities interested Paul, including vineyards, retail clock stores and a fishing camp in British Columbia. Soon after his marriage to Maureen Marshall in 1983, Paul focused on pursuing his greatest passions: travel and philanthropy.

In each country they visited, as well as at home, Paul and Maureen built lifelong relationships with people from all walks of life. As a result of his generosity, many children were afforded a better education and lifestyle, and a forever friend. One of Paul’s most passionate projects was the furtherance of the mission of The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program. As a member and then as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Paul mentored many young people to foster respect for all living things and make the world a better place. As long as his health allowed, Paul continued to give of his time and talents at Northern Light School and the Lindsay Wildlife Museum.

The lives and hearts touched by Paul span many decades and continents. Closest to his heart were his wife, Maureen Marshall; children, David and Kathleen (and her husband Steve); his sister Nancy MacKenzie (and her husband Sandy and their four children); and his grandchildren, Kelsey and Matthew Hollenbeck and Holly Kase. The family would like to express their gratitude to the neighbors, caregivers and friends who have provided compassion and companionship during these trying times.

May Paul’s spirit for giving and quest for adventure continue to live on in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to one of Paul’s favorite charities, The Jane Goodall Institute and Hospice of the East Bay.
