Hotel Zetta: SoMa hot spot
Since its opening in 2013, Hotel Zetta has secured itself as the cool place to be downtown. More hip than hipster, it attracts the city’s fashionable set, which clamors to get into the see-and-be-seen speakeasy-like bar Marianne’s at adjacent restaurant the Cavalier. But Hotel Zetta also caters to SoMa’s tech scene, and that’s where the hipster vibe comes into play. “While Zeppelin is a modern interpretation of San Francisco in the 1960s, Zetta is meant to represent what the city is right now,” says Gonsalves. Cue the floor-to-ceiling-size Plinko game and virtual reality booth situated front-and-center in the lobby. Repurposed design elements abound: vintage rugs sewn together like a patchwork quilt, custom chandeliers made of 600 pairs of recycled eyeglasses, and wood floors refurbished from an old monastery. And what looks like a vintage piano in the mezzanine-level playroom actually opens up and transforms into a working DJ station. The guest rooms have more of a wellness focus but are nonetheless hip, with touches like meditation headbands, Dyson air purifiers, and organic cotton robes. “The bookshelf wallpaper in the bathrooms gets Instagrammed all the time,” Gonsalves says, chuckling. Rooms starting at $299; 55 Fifth St., S.F.; (415) 543-8555. www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com. Hotel Zetta offers games galore, including a pool table in the Playroom, above,, and floor-to-ceiling Plinko.
