Braves designate pitcher Colon, 44, for assignment

-

Bartolo Colon was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, one day after the 44-year-old dropped to 2-8 and a day before the Braves visit Oakland, where the four-time AllStar resurrected his career in 2012 and ’13.

Pitching for the first time since going on the disabled list June 6, Colon allowed six runs, eight hits and three walks in four innings during a 7-4 loss at San Diego. on Wednesday.

The former A’s starter has an 8.14 ERA in 13 starts and has been unable to find the form that earned him an Cy Young Award and has made him a 235-game winner.

“The reality is that I’ve been getting hit hard and that’s the truth and you can’t dance around it,” Colon, an All-Star last year with the Mets, said through an interpreter after his latest loss.

Rookie hurt in debut: In the first inning of his major-league debut, New York Yankees outfielder Dustin Fowler was carted off the field after slamming into the short sidewall in foul territory trying to catch a foul ball in Chicago. Fowler tried to stand and walk, but his right leg buckled twice before he sat down and waited for help.

He left the game, and the Yankees later said he was to have surgery on his right knee Thursday night for an open rupture of the patellar tendon. Fowler was due to lead off the second inning for what would have been his first major-league at-bat.

Turner breaks wrist: Trea Turner suffered a broken right wrist after being hit by a pitch, and it’s unclear when Washington will get back its shortstop. Turner was hit by Pedro Strop’s 2-1 fastball in the seventh inning of Washington’s 5-4 loss to the Cubs.

The 24-year-old shortstop had two steals in the game to take sole possession of the majorleague lead with 35. The Nationals did not provide a timetable for his return.

Bryant out: Kris Bryant was out of the Chicago Cubs’ starting lineup for the series finale at Washington, a day after spraining his right ankle on third base while catching a foul popup in the sixth inning Wednesday, and could be sidelined until next week.

Napa joins PAPBC: The expansion Napa Silverados said they will join the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs next season. The independent league made up of teams in Sonoma, Vallejo, San Rafael and Pittsburg is working to add a sixth team for 2018.
