With Sarkodie ejected, Quakes fall to Atlanta
Josef Martinez scored two goals to lift host Atlanta United past the San Jose Earthquakes 4-2 in a Major League Soccer game Tuesday.
Anton Walkes scored the go-ahead off a header in the 81st minute.
Martinez scored his second goal of the match — ninth of the season — in the 89th minute to clinch the win.
San Jose (7-7-5) got a goal from Tommy Thompson — the first of his four-year career — in the second minute and led 1-0 at halftime, but played with 10 men after defender Kofie Sarkodie drew a red card in the 32nd minute.
Martinez scored off a header from Greg Garza’s cross in the 65th minute to give Atlanta a one-goal edge. Less than a minute later, San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski equalized by beating goalkeeper Kyle Reynish to a perfectly placed cross to the far post.
The lone regular-season matchup of the teams was delayed 30 minutes because of lightning. Atlanta (9-7-3) handed Earthquakes head coach Chris Leitch his first loss. San Jose fired Dominic Kinnear on June 25 and promoted Leitch, who had been the club’s technical director.
“The work they’ve put in, you can’t ask for much more,” Leitch said of his players. “Especially considering what they’ve been through these past nine days.”

ELSEWHERE Pacquiao seeks review of defeat
Manny Pacquiao has asked the WBO to act on a request by Philippine sports officials for a review of his welterweight world title loss Sunday in Australia to Jeff Horn, saying he didn’t want to see the boxing industry “dying because of unfair decision and officiating.”
While Pacquiao has accepted his controversial unanimous-decision loss to Horn, the Philippine senator said Wednesday that as a leader and boxer “I have the moral obligation to uphold sportsmanship, truth and fairness in the eyes of the public.”
