BMW 4-series

MSRP: $43,395 Two doors or four, roof or no roof, four cylinders or six; no matter the formula, the 4-series does not disappoint. Two turbocharged engines are available — a 248-hp 2.0-liter inline-four and a 320-hp 3.0-liter inline-six. Both can be equipped with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear- or all-wheel drive. A 6.5-inch infotainment display is standard; navigation, Apple CarPlay, automated emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control are all optional features.

Infiniti Q60

MSRP: $39,855 Its aggressive design and a duo of eager engines set the Q60 apart from the competition. The base engine is a 208-hp 2.0-liter turbo four, while the optional twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 makes 300 hp. Both pair to a seven-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available. The V-6 adds Infiniti’s dynamic suspension and adaptive steering technology. A 400-hp Red Sport model is out now. This might be Infiniti’s best-looking car to date, and that’s saying something.

Lexus RC

MSRP: $41,130 Style, performance, and a wealth of configurations pose the RC as a fetching luxury coupe. The RC200t offers a 241-hp turbocharged inline-four with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the RC300 has a 255-hp V-6, all-wheel drive, and a six-speed automatic. The RC350 sports a 306-hp V-6 and rear-wheel drive with an eight-speed auto; all-wheel drive is optional but necessitates a six-speed. The F Sport package adds adaptive dampers, special gauges, and unique styling.

Mazda MX-5 Miata

MSRP: $25,790 For pure driving bliss, the Miata is tops in our book — it’s so good, it’s a 10Best winner for 2017. This legendary two-seater has a 155-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed manual; a six-speed automatic is optional. Its use of aluminum helps keep weight down, so the Miata remains eminently flingable in the twists and turns that you’ll surely seek out whenever you hit the road. The RF model offers a power-folding targa top, but it’s much more expensive than the cloth-topped Miata.
