Lochte cleared in Brazil
An appellate court in Brazil ruled Friday that U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte should be cleared of charges stemming from his fabricating of a story about getting robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro during August’s Olympics.
The ruling came the same day Lochte was scheduled to return to competition after a 10-month suspension by USA Swimming. But the six-time gold medalist pulled out of the Los Angeles Invitational hours before it started, citing a desire to focus on his newborn son, born June 8.
Lochte had been charged with a false crime report, which could have resulted in a sentence of one to six months in jail, though he would have been unlikely to serve it.
A three-judge panel of the court concluded in a 2-1 ruling that Lochte did not break Brazilian law. The panel noted that Rio police, not Lochte, had initiated the investigation and that the story he first told NBC did not meet the standard of a false report.
