NFL’s Panthers looking for GM

-

The Carolina Panthers, who faded from a Super Bowl spot to a losing season in 2016, fired general manager Dave Gettleman on Monday, eight days before the Panthers begin training camp.

Owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement that he made the decision after a long evaluation of the team’s football operations.

Gettleman had been Carolina’s GM for four seasons, during which the Panthers went 40-23-1 and reached the playoffs three times. Carolina was 6-10 last season, a year after reaching Super Bowl 50, in which it lost to Denver.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and running back Le’Veon Bell failed to reach an agreement on a longterm contract, meaning Bell will play on a one-year, $12.1 million deal this season. WNBA: Chelsea Gray scored 16 points and Stanford alum Nneka Ogwumike added 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the host Los Angeles Sparks past the Indiana Fever 80-62. NHL: Defenseman Brian Campbell, who played one of his 17 seasons with the Sharks (200708), is retiring at age 38. He won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.

The Ottawa Senators avoided arbitration with restricted free agent forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau by agreeing to a $9.3 million, three-year contract. Soccer: In a friendly in Sandy, Utah, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku scored as Manchester United beat MLS member Real Salt Lake 2-1. Real led on Luis Silva’s 23rd-minute goal before Mkhitaryan (29th minute) and Lukaku (39th) struck. Water polo: Stanford alum Alex Bowen scored two goals but the U.S. men fell to Croatia 12-7 in their opening match at the world championships in Budapest, Hungary.
