Does Yankees’ deal affect Giants, A’s?

Tuesday began with hot rumors about the Yankees aggressively seeking a first baseman, and it ended with the Yankees pulling off a major trade for a third baseman.

In between, there were reports the Yankees were talking with the A’s about first baseman Yonder Alonso, and a case could have been made for the Giants’ Brandon Belt in pinstripes.

In the end, the White Sox sent third baseman Todd Frazier to the Bronx as the featured chip in a seven-player trade, and immediate speculation was that Frazier could play both corners.

Because the Yankees’ first basemen have been so pathetic — ranking last or next-to-last in several offensive categories, including batting average, slugging percentage and OPS — that was the position believed to be the Yankees’ focus.

As it turns out, third baseman Chase Headley’s lack of production was a sore spot, too. Frazier has played 82 career games at first, but the Yankees could trade for a first baseman.

The A’s and Giants, both in last place, are shaking up their rosters with the future in mind, and neither Alonso nor Belt is untouchable. Both are above average defensively and on target for career highs in home runs, but there’s a big difference that makes Alonso far more appealing.

He’s making $4 million and will be a free agent after the season. Belt’s $72.8 million contract is a game-changer, calling for a raise from $2.8 million this year to $16 million. Not exactly what the Yankees desire, especially after taking on millions in Tuesday’s deal.

The Yankees must weigh the chance they’ll have Greg Bird, who opened this season at first but played only 19 games and had ankle surgery Tuesday that could end his season. Bird remains coveted but has hardly played since his rookie season in 2015 because of injuries.

With the retirement of Mark Teixeira, Bird was supposed to be The Man. The Yankees then turned to Chris Carter but dumped him this month. Then they platooned newly acquired rookie Garrett Cooper and Ji-Man Choi.

Now Frazier is aboard. The A’s and Giants figure to be busy on the trade front nonetheless.
