Yanks get Frazier, Robertson in trade

-

The Yankees strengthened their hand for a playoff push Tuesday night, acquiring infielder Todd Frazier and relievers David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle from the White Sox for reliever Tyler Clippard and three prospects.

Along with Clippard, the White Sox got left-handed pitcher Ian Clarkin and outfielders Blake Rutherford and Tito Polo. Chicago also said it would call up infield prospect Yoan Moncada for Wednesday’s game against the Dodgers.

Frazier was a two-time AllStar third baseman with Cincinnati, but is in the midst of a down year. He could play first base, where the Yankees have struggled all season, or he could remain at third base and Chase Headley could move across the diamond.

Frazier is hitting .207 with 16 home runs and 44 RBIs. Last year, he set career highs with 40 homers and 98 RBIs. He is eligible for free agency after this season.

Robertson, 32, is a former Yankees closer and is 4-2 with a 2.70 ERA. He has been successful on 13 of 14 save chances. Arizona-Detroit swap: The Diamondbacks acquired outfielder J.D. Martinez from the Tigers for a package of prospects, hoping to solidify a trouble spot in left field.

Detroit received Double-A infielder Dawel Lugo, switchhitting infield prospect Sergio Alcantara and shortstop Jose King. Lugo was regarded as the Diamondbacks’ No. 2 prospect.

Martinez, 29, is hitting .305 with 16 home runs and 39 RBIs. Astros lose Correa: All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa of AL West-leading Houston is expected to miss six to eight weeks because of a torn ligament in his left thumb.

The Astros put Correa on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday, a day after he hurt himself taking a swing against Seattle.

Infielder Colin Moran was recalled from Triple-A Fresno.

“It’s obviously disappointing, but at the same time, I have to focus on what I can control and that’s hopefully having successful surgery and finishing my rehab and hopefully coming back late September or so and being able to play in the playoffs,” Correa said.

He is batting .320 with 18 doubles and 20 home runs, and his 67 RBIs are tied for second in the American League.

Vogt sidelined: Milwaukee catcher Stephen Vogt is out for at least a month with a sprained left knee following a collision at home plate.

Vogt, the former A’s catcher selected off waivers by the NL Central-leading Brewers last month, was hurt Monday when Pittsburgh pitcher Chad Kuhl ran into him in the fifth inning while trying to score from second on a hit to right field.

Briefly: Minnesota right-hander Phil Hughes will miss the rest of the season because of persistent arm trouble related to a condition that required rib-removal surgery a year ago. ... The Reds placed right-handed pitcher Scott Feldman on the 10-day DL with right knee inflammation.
