Isner wins Hall of Fame title

-

Top-seeded John Isner beat Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden 6-3, 7-6 (4) in Newport, R.I., for his third Hall of Fame Open title.

The American also won the grass-court event in 2011 and 2012. He has 11 career titles, all at the ATP World Tour 250 level.

Isner became the second player to win an ATP title without facing a break point since records began in 1991.

A tearful Kiki Bertens used an emotional change of ends in the deciding set of the Gstaad (Switzerland) Ladies Championship final to beat Anett Kontaveit 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Leading 2-1 in the third set, Bertens, the second seed, sobbed in her chair as she talked with her coach before winning four straight games to clinch the title. NBA: Former Warriors center Marreese Speights, who averaged 8.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game with the Clippers last season, agreed to a one-year, $2.1 million deal with the Magic, USA Today reported. Cricket: The English women’s team beat India by nine runs to win the World Cup at a place that not so long ago shunned female players. Lord’s, the London ground often referred to as the “Home of Cricket,” drew a full house — 26,500 — for the title game, about six times the previous high mark for a women’s match there.

For the first time since the Women’s World Cup began in 1973, the players received daily expenses equal to those provided for men in International Cricket Council events, and the visiting teams flew to England for the tournament in business class, as has long been the norm for men.
