Raiders sign 2nd-round choice
The Raiders signed secondround draft pick Obi Melifonwu on Wednesday, leaving only one unsigned rookie: firstrounder Gareon Conley.
Melifonwu, a safety from Connecticut, was the 56th overall pick in April and is expected to help Oakland cover tight ends. As a senior, he had 118 tackles with four interceptions, three passes defensed and one fumble recovery.
Rookies, along with quarterbacks, reported to training camp in Napa on Monday, with veterans due Friday. It’s a little odd that Melifonwu missed three days, given that the value of his contract is predetermined: It’s worth $4.5 million for four years.
Conley, meanwhile, is still under investigation by Cleveland police on rape allegations. The cornerback hasn’t been charged, and he said his meeting with the police in May went well. The Raiders expect to sign Conley soon.
The Los Angeles Chargers acquired quarterback Cardale Jones from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for an undisclosed conditional draft pick. The 6-foot-5 QB led Ohio State to a national title during the 2014 season. He was a fourth-round pick by Buffalo in 2016.
Jones was inactive for 15 games in Buffalo before throwing 11 passes in the fourth quarter of the season finale.
The New York Jets claimed wide receiver-kick returner Lucky Whitehead, two days after the Cowboys cut him following a shoplifting charge in what turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.
The Los Angeles Rams signed quarterback Dan Orlovsky. Orlovsky is the third quarterback on the Rams’ roster. He is likely to compete with Sean Mannion for the backup job behind former Cal quarterback Jared Goff.
