A 42-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday night outside a residential building in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, officials said Wednesday.

The victim was identified by the city medical examiner as Oakland resident Robert Pleasant, but investigators did not elaborate on the circumstances of the slaying.

The killing startled many residents in the Curran House on the 100 block of Taylor Street as they awoke to news of the death and came upon a bloody scene just outside the building.

“It’s frightening,” said 60-year-old resident Sergio Flores. “Every day it’s like this. You never know what this neighborhood is going to bring.”

Pleasant was shot dead after some kind of altercation on the street around 9:38 p.m., police said. No suspect was identified or arrested in the killing.

Managers at the building posted notes on residents’ doors on Wednesday morning, alerting them of the previous night’s violence. The victim did not live at the Curran House, employees there said.

“Our thoughts are with those affected and we plan on having a meeting and resources available and let you know as soon as we have more details,” the note said.

Twelve hours after the killing, a worker with the city’s Department of Public Works came by to clean up the grim scene.
