Ray out after liner to head

-

The Arizona Diamondbacks put All-Star lefthander Robbie Ray on the seven-day concussion disabled list Saturday, a day after he was hit in the head by a line drive in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Ray was in the clubhouse Saturday before Arizona played at Busch Stadium.

“We saw Robbie today,” Lovullo said. “He came into the clubhouse and he looked really good. Obviously, the wound was repaired with a couple staples in his head. He just said he felt a little bit sore. So everything is trending towards a very positive outcome and we’re very thankful for that.”

Ray is 9-5 with a 3.11 ERA in 20 starts. He left Friday’s game in the second inning after being struck by a line drive from rookie Luke Voit.

Ray issued a statement via his Twitter account, writing: “I am still recovering, but feeling much better already.” Haniger hit in face: Mariners right fielder Mitch Haniger was hit in the face by a 95 mph fastball from Mets starter Jacob deGrom in the second inning Saturday in Seattle.

Haniger was down in the batter’s box for a couple minutes, then was able to walk off the field with blood dripping from his mouth. He suffered a cut in his mouth and was taken off-site for further examination.

Haniger is probably headed to the DL, manager Scott Servais said.

“Obviously when something like that happens, it’s scary,” Servais said. “He’s got no fractures, his teeth are OK, and he’s got a pretty severe laceration on his upper lip. He’s getting some work done on that now. It could have been a lot worse.” Price calls out Eckersley: Red Sox pitcher David Price remains frustrated with TV analyst Dennis Eckersley over his critical comments about some of his teammates.

“If Eck was around, he’d know who we are. He’s never in the clubhouse,” Price said of the Hall of Famer who pitched for the A’s. “He’s the one guy I’ve seen in my career that never shows his face in the clubhouse.”

The Boston Globe first reported late last month that Price, who is now on the DL, confronted Eckersley on a team flight. Price was upset Eckersley didn’t make himself available to the players after what they felt were harsh comments.

“If you’re going to say what he said, come around, show your face,” Price said Saturday. “If guys have a problem with it, pull him aside. That ain’t how it’s done. That ain’t the first time it’s happened here regarding Eck. It’s unfortunate.” Briefly: Pitcher Clayton Kershaw played catch for the second day in a row, giving the Dodgers another positive sign that he is closer to returning from a back injury than they originally speculated . ... The Braves placed outfielder Matt Kemp on the 10-day DL with a strained right hamstring.
