Mary Conway Taylor

1915 - 2017

Mary Margaret Conway was born on March 31, 1915 to Winifred Ryan and James Conway, immigrants from Ireland. She passed away peacefully on July 13, 2017 at Saint Joseph’s Villa.

She was married to Roy and together they had one son, Bill. They then later divorced. For 30 years of her life, Mary dedicated her time to working for the IRS.

Mary Conway was very proud of her Irish heritage, traveling to Ireland with her family to share the beauty of the Emerald Isle and meet relatives. It is said that the Irish temperament is a mixture of charm and warmth, a wit that shines through adversity with irrepressible buoyancy, a vivacious spirt, and kindliness and tolerance for the common frailties of man. She was memorable and an inspiration to anyone who met her. People saw her as courageous, independent and a progressive woman, even at 102 years of age. When asked what she attributed her longevity to, she would usually say ‘good Irish stock’, San Francisco air, her nightly ‘Tidley’ and that God had lost her file. With this obituary it must mean God found her file.

Even though living the past 10 years in Salt Lake City, she left her heart in San Francisco. Her Irish gift of gab would share stories with anyone who would listen of roller skating up and down the hills, swimming at Sutro Baths, taking the ferry across the bay, watching building of the bridges and many other memories about the charm of the City by the Bay.

Mary was known as Aunty Mary and Nana to many and across generations. She dearly loved so many people in her life. She is survived by her son, Bill (Dolores) Taylor; grandsons Ryan, James, and Mark; great grandchildren Ian and Keelie; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Margaret Granucci.

The family would like to thank Saint Joseph’s Villa for the kindness and care they shared with her, especially the residents and staff at the Senior Apartments who made her feel at home for the past ten years.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Villa in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment will be held on August 21 at 11:00 AM at Holy Cross Cemetery, 1500 Mission Rd, Colma, California.

Mary was a proud graduate of Immaculate Conception Academy in San Francisco. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be sent to ICA Cristo Rey, 3625 24th Street, San Francisco, CA 94110.
