Don’t look for big names in Hall of Fame Game

-

Don’t expect to see too many stars on the field Thursday night when the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals open the NFL preseason in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

Don’t look for many starters, either.

For those who believe four preseason games are too many, seeing their team play in Canton isn’t a welcome sight. Both head coaches, Jason Garrett for Dallas and Bruce Arians for Arizona, will covet getting an extra chance to watch their rookies and fringe players compete. That’s it.

As for the Dak Prescotts, Jason Wittens and Ezekiel Elliotts from Big D, forget it. Same for Carson Palmer, Larry Fitzgerald and Patrick Peterson for the Cardinals.

“This will be about the young guys,” Arians said, although top draft choice Haason Reddick of Temple, who is making a switch from defensive end to linebacker, will receive limited playing time, too. He “is not going to play a ton,” Arians said.

The game is being held on Thursday night for the first time. The reason the teams were chosen for the game is simple: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and former Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner will be inducted into the Hall on Saturday night.

Rams’ Easley out for year: A person with knowledge of the situation says Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Dominique Easley is expected to miss the season with a torn knee ligament.

Easley, thought to be a likely starter, hurt his right knee during training camp Tuesday and was taken off the field on a cart. Easley also tore ligaments in both knees during college at Florida.

Easley was the Patriots’ first-round pick in 2014, but his two seasons in New England both ended early because of injuries, including a knee problem in his rookie year. After the Patriots let him go, Easley signed with the Rams last year and had a solid season with 35 tackles and 31⁄2 sacks.

Briefly: Los Angeles Chargers rookie offensive lineman Forrest Lamp tore a ligament in his right knee during the fourth practice of training camp . ... Second-year wide receiver Sterling Shepard had to leave New York Giants practice after rolling his left ankle. Head coach Ben McAdoo said the injury was only a sprain. He said further evaluations were planned.
