Sharapova withdraws
Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the Bank of the West Classic with soreness in her left arm and underwent testing.
The tournament made the announcement Wednesday, saying the wild-card entry was pulling out of the event at Stanford based on the recommendation of a doctor as a “preventative decision” to avoid further injury trouble.
She had been scheduled to play Wednesday night, so seventh-seeded Lesia Tsurenko advanced to the quarterfinals.
Sharapova, a five-time major champion and former No. 1 who recently dealt with a left thigh injury after her April return from a 15-month doping ban, felt the injury late in her 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 opening win against Jennifer Brady on Monday night.
Sharapova said: “Toward the end of Monday night’s match, I felt pain in my left forearm. After yesterday’s scan, the doctor has recommended I don’t risk further injury. Monday night’s crowd was so special and I wish I could continue playing but I have to make a preventative decision.”
Muguruza returns: Reigning Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza eased by American Kayla Day 6-2, 6-0 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Muguruza, the top seed, overwhelmed the 17-year-old in less than an hour.
Muguruza will play No. 5 seed Ana Konjuh, a 7-5, 6-5 winner over Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva.
After Sharapova withdrew, Tsurenko advanced to face Madison Keys.
Keys, seeded third, rallied past qualifier Caroline Dolehide 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in an allAmerican match. Keys won four straight games in the second set and made an early break in the third.
