Groin injury shelves Rockies’ Freeland

The wild-card contending Colorado Rockies placed rookie left-hander Kyle Freeland on the 10-day disabled list Saturday, a day after he was forced to leave his start in the first inning because of a left groin strain.

Freeland, who leads both the team and major-league rookies with 11 wins this season, had thrown 11 pitches and recorded one out when he was lifted from Friday night’s game against the Philadelph­ia Phillies because of the injury.

The Rockies optioned righthande­r Scott Oberg to Triple-A

Albuquerqu­e while recalling righties Shane Carle and Carlos Estévez. They reinstated from the 60-day DL right-handed starter Chad Bettis, who is coming back from a bout with testicular cancer. He was optioned to Albuquerqu­e.

Seattle’s Hernandez on DL: The Mariners put right-hander Felix Hernandez on the 10-day DL, retroactiv­e to Wednesday, with biceps tendinitis. Hernandez was scheduled to start Saturday night against the Royals before the game was postponed. Left-hander

Marco Gonzalez was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to take Hernandez’s rotation turn. Holliday’s back issue: Yankees designated hitter Matt Holliday could be headed to the DL with a sore lower back. He tweaked his back swinging during Friday’s 7-2 loss to the Indians and was not in the lineup Saturday.

Holliday is batting .136 (11for-81) with one homer and four RBIs since the All-Star break. Briefly: In addition to claiming reliever George Kontos off waivers from the Giants, the Pirates acquired utility infielder Sean Rodriguez from the Braves in exchange for minorleagu­e infielder Connor Joe . ... The Orioles sent right-hander Chris Tillman (1-7 with an 8.10 ERA) to the bullpen, where they hope he can regain the form that enabled him to anchor the rotation since 2013 . ... The Braves called up lefthander Max Fried, one of the team’s top prospects, to pitch out of the bullpen. He’s the second prospect to join the Braves this week after second baseman Ozzie Albies was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett.
