Lorraine Marie Callan
Lorraine M. Callan passed away on July 17, 2017 at age 95 from pneumonia. She was born in San Francisco on January 27, 1922, the daughter of Ernest John Day and Louise Pauline (Kuhrtz) Day. Just ten days after turning 21, she received her BA in Economics at U.C. Berkeley. Following college, she worked for the U.S. Navy and W.R. Grace and Company to help the War Effort. In 1947, she earned her teaching credential at U.C. Berkeley.
Due to the overcrowding of her classroom, Lorraine met the late Michael Carter Callan, a board member of the Jefferson School District. On June 17, 1950, they were married. In 1958, they moved to Hillsborough, and in 1970, they relocated to Atherton where they resided for many years. In 2006, she moved to Marin to be closer to her children.
Lorraine will be lovingly remembered as a devoted mother, magnificent grandmother, and loyal friend. She had a loving and caring heart. As a gifted pianist, she entertained her family with various genres of music, such as classical, ragtime, and musicals, and encouraged everyone to join in. She enjoyed vacationing in Yosemite and Lake Tahoe and tending her rose garden.
Lorraine is survived by her four children, Michael, James, Pamela, and John (Kelly) Callan, and her six grandchildren, Nicole Auster and Richard, Connor, Wesley, Jonathan, and Christopher Callan.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, August 9th, at noon at Saint Sebastian Church, 373 Bon Air Rd, Greenbrae, CA.
