Li ousts Aubert at Women’s Amateur

Lucy Li, the 14-year-old golf prodigy from Redwood City, advanced to the quarterfin­als of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championsh­ip outside San Diego. Li won two matches Thursday, beating Bethany Wu 6 and 5 in the morning and edging Shannon Aubert of Stanford, the stroke-play medalist, 1-up in the afternoon.

Stanford’s Albane Valenzuela reached the quarterfin­als with wins over Cheyenne Knight and Stephanie Lau.

Stanford announced that it will host a tournament at San Francisco’s Harding Park in March. Harding will host the Goodwin, an annual tribute to former Cardinal coach Wally Goodwin, March 29-31. The event, featuring 25 of the nation’s top teams and known as the U.S. Intercolle­giate until it was renamed in 2014, is typically held at Stanford Golf Course. Obituary: Former major-league umpire Ken Kaiser has died at 72. The World Umpires Associatio­n said Mr. Kaiser died in his hometown of Rochester, N.Y., on Tuesday. He had diabetes for years.

An American League umpire from 1977 through ’99, Mr. Kaiser worked two World Series, one All-Star Game and several playoff series. Tennis: Roger Federer overcame a weak first set to post a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over David Ferrer in the third round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Top-ranked Karolina Pliskova advanced to the quarterfin­als of the women’s Rogers Cup in Toronto with a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 1-0 victory over Naomi Osaka, who retired in the third set with an abdominal injury.
