L.A. City Council OKs Olympics plan

Los Angeles took another step toward bringing the 2028 Olympics to the city when the City Council voted 12-0 to endorse documents at the heart of its plan to stage the Games.

The contract outlines Los Angeles’ financial responsibi­lity in hosting, although a budget for the proposed 2028 Games has not been completed.

Golf: The run of 14-year-old Lucy Li of Redwood City at the U.S. Women’s Amateur outside San Diego ended with a 4-and-3 loss to UCLA’s Lilia Vu in the quarterfin­als. Stanford’s Albane Valenzuela advanced to the semifinals with a 4-and-3 win over Robynn Ree. Soccer: Olivier Giroud completed an exhilarati­ng comeback as Arsenal beat Leicester 4-3 in the English Premier League’s season opener in London. After Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey tied the score in the 83rd minute, Giroud scored the winner two minutes later.

Morocco’s soccer federation said it will bid for the 2026 World Cup, providing a late challenge to a joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico. Motor sports: In Brooklyn, Mich., Brad Keselowski won the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan Internatio­nal Speedway with a lap of 35.451 seconds (203.97 mph), putting him in good position to try for an elusive win at his home state track. Joey Logano qualified second. WNBA: Chelsea Gray’s 23 points helped the Los Angeles Sparks defeat the host Minnesota Lynx 70-64 . ... Shavonte Zellous scored 20 points in the New York Liberty’s 83-77 win over the host Atlanta Dream. College basketball: Louisville appealed sanctions imposed by the NCAA in a sex scandal that could result in the loss of the school’s 2013 national championsh­ip. The school said the governing body imposed “draconian” penalties and ignored the school’s self-imposed discipline when it vacated up to 123 Louisville victories involving players who had received improper benefits.
