Sabathia says he’s ready to go

-

CC Sabathia hopes to come off the disabled list as soon as he is eligible Saturday.

The Yankees left-hander threw a bullpen session before Monday’s Subway Series opener against the New York Mets and said his right knee felt much better.

“I was cutting it loose at the end,” he said. “Very encouraged.”

Sabathia left a start at Toronto in pain last Tuesday with knee inflammation. The following day he had cortisone, platelet rich plasma and Synvisc injections.

He threw about 30 pitches Monday and plans to throw another bullpen session in a few days.

“A big difference from where I was last Tuesday,” Sabathia said.

Sabathia is 9-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 19 starts. He pitches with a brace because of the knee, which was repaired with surgery in July 2014 and again in October.

With Sabathia and righthander Masahiro Tanaka on the disabled list, right-hander Luis Cessa was recalled from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start against the Mets on Monday and left-hander Caleb Smith was optioned to Triple-A. Comeback trail: Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg, on the DL since July 27 with a nerve impingement in his right elbow, allowed one run and three hits in five innings in a rehab start for Class A Potomac.

Strasburg threw 64 pitches, plus a few more in the bullpen to get up to the 75 the team had prescribed. Afterward, he sounded like he was eager to get back into majorleague action.

“I feel like I was ready to come back before this, but they wanted to be conservative, so hopefully this is enough,” Strasburg said.

Mets pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Jeurys Familia are ready to take major steps forward as they recover from injuries, Newsday reported.

Syndergaard, a starter sidelined since April because of a lat injury, will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, manager Terry Collins said.

Familia, a reliever who has been out since May after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot from his right arm, is set to begin a rehab assignment with the Mets’ affiliate in the Gulf Coast League.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said it was too early to determine whether left-hander David Price would need a rehab start in the minors. Price last pitched on July 22 before going on the disabled list with elbow inflammation.

Transactions: The Mariners plan to promote left-hander Andrew Albers from the minors to start Tuesday, according to multiple reports. Albers was acquired last week from the Braves, for whom he was 12-3 with a 2.61 ERA at Triple-A Gwinnett. Albers will fill the rotation spot that had belonged to James Paxton before he landed on the DL with a strained left pectoral muscle.

The Diamondbacks placed outfielder David Peralta on the paternity leave list and recalled right-hander J.J. Hoover from Triple-A Reno.

The Blue Jays have agreed to terms with former A’s left-hander Brett Anderson, pending a physical, Sportsnet in Canada reported. Anderson, who had been with the Cubs, was on their DL from early May until July because of a back problem, then was released July 31.

Injury report: The Astros placed catcher Brian McCann on the DL because of a sore right knee and promoted catcher Max Stassi from Triple-A Fresno.
