Barca’s Suarez out a month

After losing Neymar for good to Paris-St. Germain, Barcelona also will play the first month of the Spanish league season without Luis Suarez.

Suarez will be sidelined for four weeks after medical tests revealed a knee injury in his right leg. Suarez was injured in the final minutes of Wednesday’s 2-0 loss at Real Madrid in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup. NHL: The Buffalo Sabres signed forward Zemgus Girgensons to a two-year, $3.2 million contract. Buffalo’s first-round pick in 2012 has 37 goals and 49 assists in 277 career games over four seasons.

The New Jersey Devils center Travis Zajac had surgery to repair a pectoral muscle and will miss four to six months. Tennis: Grigor Dimitrov rallied from a 4-1 second-set deficit for a 6-3, 7-5 win over Juan Martin del Potro and reached the Western & Southern Open quarterfin­als in Mason, Ohio.

On the women’s side, sec- Simona Halep became the tournament’s first quarterfin­alist with a 6-4, 6-3 win over 15th-seeded Anastasija Sevastova. Skiing: Six-time overall World Cup champion Marcel Hirscher broke his left ankle in practice during his first day back on skis. There was no immediate prognosis when he will be able to ski again. The new season, which includes the Olympics, starts Oct. 29 with a giant slalom in Soelden, Austria. Rugby: Four-time champion New Zealand blew away Canada 48-5 and set up a semifinal against the United States at the Women’s Rugby World Cup. Defending champion England will play France in the other semifinal on Tuesday in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Obituary: The New England Patriots say former nose tackle Lester Williams, who started in the franchise’s first Super Bowl appearance after the 1985 season, has died at 58 in Birmingham, Ala. It did not give other details.

The 27th overall pick in the 1982 NFL draft, Mr. Williams played in 40 games for the Patriots from 1982 to 1985. He also played one season for San Diego (1986) and Seattle (1987).
