Charles Joseph Murphy

-

April 29, 1952-Aug 14, 2017

Born and reared in San Francisco, Charlie Murphy was one-of-a-kind, a true gentleman who treated everyone with kindness and good humor. He loved his native city, and took great pleasure in being a 4th generation San Franciscan. For nearly three decades, he was employed as a coach operator for Santa Clara County Transit (later VTA) and was adored by passengers and fellow bus drivers alike. He even had a group of loyal riders who would board his bus just to drive his route with him – and who would blanket him with birthday cards and Christmas presents. He was known for his quick wit, his patience, humility, and his unwavering support of the underdog.

He treasured Muir Woods, Fort Funston, Stern Grove, and so many other places around the beautiful Bay Area. He delighted in spending his retirement taking his dogs through meandering walks among the redwoods of East Bay Regional Parks. His family will miss him desperately but we take great solace in the fact that Charlie lived to see his beloved Niners, Giants, and Dubs all win championships. Even this year, Charlie watched every Giants game (at least until Strickland was called in).

Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Patricia Murphy. Survived by: Nanita Cranford, whom he raised as his own; sisters Patricia and Diane; Nephews Alex Jr., Tomas, Danny, Jason, Scott, and niece Maureen. We will honor Charlie with a family remembrance Saturday, August 19. Charlie was devoted to cats and dogs and donations to your local animal shelter would be a wonderful way to honor his memory.
