QB Bortles might be done as starter for Jacksonville

-

Blake Bortles might have started his last game for the Jaguars.

Jacksonville head coach Doug Marrone opened up the team’s quarterback competition after another inconsistent performance Thursday night from Bortles, the third overall pick in the 2014 draft.

Bortles completed 8 of 13 passes for 65 yards in a 12-8 exhibition loss to Tampa Bay. All four of his drives ended with punts. The first-team offense has three points in Bortles’ six preseason possessions.

He misfired to Allen Robinson twice Thursday, including a woefully underthrown pass down the seam that drew boos from the home crowd.

“It’s hard to not hear people booing,” Bortles said. “But if they’re cheering or booing, it’s kind of irrelevant, at least for me it is. I think you’ve got to treat adversity and prosperity the same way. They’re not booing for no reason. They’re booing because you didn’t do your job.”

Bortles had a five-interception performance during the team’s first practice in full pads last month and has been up and down since then.

“I’m looking for someone who is going to lead this offense,” Marrone said. “I’m not happy with the performance. I’m not going to sit here and BS anyone. Everyone saw it out there. Whatever you want to call it, I’m still trying to evaluate who the best person is at that position.”

It could be Chad Henne. The 10th-year pro and secondround pick by Miami in 2008 completed 6 of 10 passes for 44 yards against the Bucs. Henne started 22 games for Jacksonville from 2012 to 2014, but has backed up Bortles since then.

Seahawks 20, Vikings 13:

Seattle defensive end Michael Bennett sat during the national anthem for the second straight game of the preseason.

Bennett was alone sitting on the Seahawks’ bench during the Star-Spangled Banner before Friday night’s home game against Minnesota. Teammates showed support for Bennett, with center Justin Britt standing with his hand on Bennett’s shoulder. Defensive back Jeremy Lane stood next to Bennett.

In the game, Russell Wilson threw two first-half touchdown passes for Seattle, and Blair Walsh kicked two 52-yard field goals against his old team. The Seahawks might have lost tackle George Fant for an extended period to what appeared to be a right knee injury after Britt rolled into him.

Briefly:

The Ravens signed center Jeremy Zuttah, released last week by the 49ers. Zuttah, 31, rejoins the team that traded him in March . ... Chicago signed free-agent linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, a seventhyear veteran who made 11 starts for the Giants in 2016.
