Lester to DL, but not hurt seriously

-

The Cubs got an encouraging report on Jon Lester before placing the left-hander on the 10-day disabled list Friday.

Lester was examined by team physician Stephen Gryzlo after leaving Chicago’s 13-10 loss to Cincinnati on Thursday in the second inning. Lester was diagnosed with tightness in his left lat and general shoulder fatigue, but his shoulder and side were deemed structurally sound.

The Cubs are hoping rest will clear up both issues and Lester will be able to return not long after he becomes eligible.

Reliever Justin Grimm also was placed on the DL with an infection in his right index finger. Pitchers Felix Peña and Rob Zastryzny were recalled from Triple-A Iowa.

Lester led a raft of starting pitchers onto the 10-day DL:

Washington scratched Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer from his start in San Diego and put him on the DL with a sore neck. Scherzer was coming off a 10-strikeout performance against the Giants.

St. Louis put right-hander Adam Wainwright on the DL with an elbow impingement and recalled right-hander Mike Mayers from Triple-A Memphis.

Detroit right-hander Anibal Sanchez hit the DL with left hamstring tightness after leaving early Wednesday against Texas.

The Reds put Scott Feldman on the 10-day DL with right knee inflammation. He will be examined in Cincinnati and could be done for the season. Dodgers get Granderson: The Dodgers acquired outfielder Curtis Granderson from the Mets for cash or a player to be named. Granderson is hitting .228 this season but has 19 home runs in 111 games. Briefly: Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler told the Detroit Free Press that he had been fined for his criticism of umpire Angel Hernandez this week, but didn’t say how much. ... The Dodgers activated first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (back injury) from the disabled list . ... Kansas City put reliever Joakim Soria on the 10-day DL with a left oblique strain . ... Minnesota called up catcher Mitch Garver from Triple-A Rochester and put outfielder Robbie Grossman on the 10day DL with a broken left thumb.
