Viewing the eclipse

The solar eclipse over the Bay Area will occur Monday from 9:01 a.m., when the moon begins to edge in front of the sun, to 11:37 a.m. Here’s a list of viewing opportunities:

The Exploratorium science museum at Pier 15 in San Francisco will conduct live eclipse viewing on the plaza in front of the building. Inside, images of the total eclipse will be livestreamed from Oregon and Wyoming onto viewing screens.

Chabot Space & Science Center, 10000 Skyline Blvd., Oakland, will allow public viewing through its 8-inch telescope and offer pinhole eclipse viewers crafted from sheets of cardboard. There will be lectures and commentary and a live feed from NASA.

Astronomers at the California Academy of Sciences, 55 Music Concourse Drive, Golden Gate Park, will answer questions and provide eclipse-viewing equipment and a live video feed of the total eclipse.

Lawrence Hall of Science, 1 Centennial Drive, Berkeley, will provide viewing on the front plaza followed by a special eclipse planetarium show inside.

The Castro Valley Library at 3600 Norbridge Ave. and the Oakland Main Library at 125 14th St. will hand out free eclipse glasses. Free pinhole viewers will be available at the Oakland library.

The Alameda Free Library, 1550 Oak St., will be open at 9 a.m. for live eclipse streaming from NASA in the community room. Live eclipse watching will take place in the library parking lot.

Ortega Branch Library, 3223 Ortega St., San Francisco, will offer eclipse story time for toddlers from 10:30 to 11 a.m., and librarians will take the children outside during the eclipse.
