James Emmett Mahoney

James Emmett Mahoney, of Kailua, Hawaii, passed away on July 31, 2017 from a rare form of cancer. He is survived by his wife Dara Grant and son Samuel Grant Mahoney, and his siblings: Timothy Mahoney (Lynn), Margaret Mahoney (Scott Lieuallen), Michael Mahoney (Bella), Terence Mahoney (Barbara Hooper), and Sheila Spieller (Steve).

A second generation San Franciscan, Jim was born on November 15, 1950 in San Francisco to Sheila & Jeremiah Mahoney. In 1962 the family relocated to Sacramento. Jim attended local area schools graduating from Jesuit High school in 1968. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a medic in Germany and ski patrolman in the 1970s. Jim completed his nursing degree at Hawai’i Pacific University.

Jim was a well-respected RN working in the Kaiser Hospital Intensive Care Unit in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was an avid skier, sailor, bicyclist, hiker, climber, and runner throughout his life. He participat­ed in triathlons and marathons in both San Francisco and Hawaii. After moving to Hawaii in the 1990s, he returned to Lake Tahoe annually to ski with friends.

Jim’s other great passion was “his boys” Jack and Max, two well- trained border collies. He spent many hours with “the boys” cheering up residents and patients at hospitals and senior centers on Oahu.
