Happiness within Crocker Highlands traditional

- By Jordan Guinn

The first time Susanne Bratter walked into 796 Rosemount Road in Crocker Highlands, she knew she was home. She saw past the living room’s tired wallpaper and kitchen’s linoleum floor and looked at the house itself, a traditional designed by architect Irwin M. Johnson in the 1930s.

“It sounds cheesy, but the first time I walked in, I got an overwhelming feeling that people are happy here,” said Bratter, who has lived at the home with her family since 1986.

Original woodwork is found throughout the twostory four-bedroom home. The kitchen has upscale appliances and a casual dining area. Public rooms open to a shaded brick courtyard and a downstairs bedroom steps outside.

Sunlight pours through bay windows in the living room, which is anchored by a fireplace. The fireplace mantel is made from Philippine mahogany, and old-growth redwood lines the floor in the original part of the home.

“The home has finishes you can’t get anymore,” Bratter said.

Across the hall, a formal dining room features leaded glass and divided light windows.

French doors off the family room open to a brick courtyard. The Bratters planted several trees back here years ago, and they have matured to

shade the space.

The home received an addition in the late 1990s. The remodel added a second story, expanded the kitchen and added a second master suite. The Bratters tapped architect Patrick McGrew to design the addition.

McGrew’s portfolio includes a renovation of San Francisco’s City Club and he served as president of the San Francisco Landmarks Board for 14 years. He was their top choice to expand the home while honoring its architectural heritage, Bratter said.

The kitchen, which was enlarged during the expansion, features a hardwood floor and also opens to the courtyard. Fisher-Paykel appliances outfit the kitchen and a pantry sits off to the side.

Upstairs, a pair of master suites are on opposite sides of the home, providing plenty of privacy and separation. The secondary master suite opens to a bathroom with two water closets.
