UNTUCKIT TAMES THE UNTAILORED LOOK

- — Flora Tsapovksy

As straightforward as men’s clothing can be, a good tailored look rises and falls on technicalities. Everything matters, from the length of the pants to the shape of the lapels. When it comes to button-ups, it’s either a neatly tucked shirt or a perfectly proportioned untucked one that makes the cut, but the latter is often hard to find. Untuckit, a men’s shirt brand with a new presence in San Francisco, is tackling the topic with a wide selection of shirts that are meant to be worn untucked.

Founded by New Yorker Chris Riccobono in 2011, Untuckit has since expanded into sports jackets and other garments, but the casually flawless shirt is still its core. Featuring a flattering curved hemline and designed to hit the pants mid-zipper, the brand’s shirts aim to prevent the sloppy, undone look often associated with an untucked classic buttonup. Earlier this year, the startup made headlines by raising a whopping $30 million from venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and announced its nationwide expansion backed by the hefty sum. The San Francisco location, comfortably tucked away in the Marina district, is one of Untuckit’s new spots across the country. Inside, male customers will find a variety of short- and long-sleeve button-ups in cotton and linens with patterns ranging from reserved gingham to frivolous flowers, as well as T-shirts, polos and other tops featuring the same length formula. Vignettes featuring California photography books and wine bottles lend a sense of place. In San Francisco, where casual is king and North Face jackets are not uncommon at the opera, this formula — simplifying and liberating the elegant shirt — is more than welcome.
