Mets lefty Matz needs more elbow surgery

-

Steven Matz needs another elbow operation, almost certainly ending a miserable 2017 season for the Mets’ left-hander.

The team said Matz was diagnosed Monday with irritation of the ulnar nerve in his left elbow. Surgery was recommended to reposition the nerve and relieve the irritation.

Matz’s operation will be scheduled in the next few days. The oft-injured lefty is 2-7 with a 6.08 ERA in 13 starts covering only 662⁄3 innings. He has been hit hard lately, going 0-6 with a 10.19 ERA in his past eight starts.

Matz had Tommy John surgery early in his pro career. His 2016 season was cut short by an elbow operation to remove bone spurs, and he began this year on the disabled list because of tenderness in the elbow. Costly crash: A hard collision between Texas third baseman Joey Gallo and reliever Matt Bush on a popup Sunday afternoon has knocked Bush (knee sprain) to the 10-day disabled list. Both were placed into MLB’s concussion protocol. Gallo suffered a nasal fracture and missed Monday’s game.

The Rangers recalled outfielder Ryan Rua from Triple-A Round Rock and purchased the contract of right-handed reliever Nick Gardewine from Double-A Frisco. Briefly The Angels placed starting pitcher JC Ramirez (elbow strain) and reliever Andrew Bailey (shoulder strain) on the 10- day disabled list. Ramirez is 11-10 with a 4.15 ERA and leads the Angels with 1471⁄3 innings pitched . ... Cleveland pulled lefthanded reliever Andrew Miller from Monday’s game against Boston after seven pitches and said he aggravated a right knee injury that had put him on the DL for two weeks this month. Indians first baseman Carlos Santana left the game, too, with lower back tightness . ... Minnesota put All-Star third baseman Miguel Sano on the 10-day DL with a stress reaction in his left shin.
