Penn ends holdout
The Raiders players stretched at the start of practice Wednesday, looked over to the weight room and cheered when left tackle Donald Penn ran out onto the field. Penn ended his 26-day holdout after he missed all of training camp, seeking a substantial raise in his 2017 salary of $5.95 million. That’s not in the cards, though his agent will continue to negotiate with Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie — in better faith now, as McKenzie had said he didn’t want to talk contract with a player who already had one and wasn’t with the team.
Penn is now expected at least to get his salary guaranteed this season. Penn, 34, made the Pro Bowl last year and is entering his fourth season with Oakland, his last on his second two-year deal.
Penn and head coach Jack Del Rio were unavailable for comment Wednesday.
The 6-foot-4, 330-pound Penn is in very good shape and can now get ready for the third preseason game Saturday and the start of the regular season. Penn, 34, knows that despite his age, he could earn a big contract somewhere next year by playing well this season.
Marshall Newhouse, a free agent signee from the Giants, was keeping Penn’s seat warm and will now return to right tackle, where he will start.
Penn outperformed his two-year, $11.9 million deal last year and wanted to be in the league’s top 10 best-paid left tackles; his salary ranks 23rd, according to the contracttracking website Spotrac.com. The Rams’ Andrew Whitworth is No. 10 at $11.25 million. Briefly: Offensive coordinator Todd Downing said he didn’t plan on putting his hand on fullback Jamize Olawale’s back during the national anthem Saturday, similar to what Carr did with Khalil Mack. “We had other guys showing their unity, and I just did it,” he said. “It was more of a reaction.” … While secondround pick Obi Melifonwu has returned to practice this week, first-rounder Gareon Conley is still out with a shin injury.
