POSITION BREAKDOWN
OFFENSE
Quarterbacks: In the “Year of the Quarterback” around the nation, Cal doesn’t have a standout. Junior Chase Forrest is the only one in a four-way competition who has attempted a pass for the Bears. Sophomore Ross Bowers leaped Forrest to be Davis Webb’s backup last season, but he couldn’t separate himself in a two-man competition for the starting spot in the spring. Freshman Chase Garbers and transfer Brandon McIlwain joined the fray during training camp.
Running backs: Tre Watson and Vic Enwere have combined for 2,341 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground in the past three seasons. Watson, who has game-breaking ability as a runner and receiver, is a preseason candidate for the Doak Walker and Paul Hornung awards. Enwere has recovered from a broken foot, and fullback Malik McMorris could have a dual role as a tight end/H-back.
Wide receivers/tight ends: If Cal finds someone to deliver the ball, it’ll have plenty of receiving options. Five of the Bears’ top seven receivers return, including sophomores Demetris Robertson and Melquise Stovall. Robertson broke the school’s freshman records for catches (50) and receiving yards (767).
Offensive line: Offensive line coach Steve Greatwood led Oregon to 10 straight conference rushing titles (2006-15), but he’s going to have to do a restoration project in Berkeley. Cal lost six linemen who combined for 129 career starts to graduation or transfer. Left tackle Patrick Mekari and center Addison Ooms lead a group that is still regularly rotating players at the other three positions.
