Nadal is top seed at U.S. Open; 1st time since 2010

Rafael Nadal is seeded No. 1 at the U.S. Open for the first time since 2010.

Karolina Pliskova is making her debut as the top-seeded woman at any Grand Slam tournament.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced the seedings Thursday, strictly adhering to this week’s ATP and WTA rankings.

The U.S. Open draw is Friday; play begins Monday.

Nadal returned this week to No. 1, a ranking he last held in 2014. That year’s French Open was the last time the Spaniard was seeded No. 1 at any major.

The man Nadal replaced atop the ATP, Andy Murray, is seeded No. 2 at Flushing Meadows, with Roger Federer No. 3.

Alexander Zverev is No. 4, and 2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic is No. 5.

After 2016 U.S. Open runner-up Pliskova, Simona Halep is the women’s No. 2 seed, followed by Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza at No. 3. Defending champion Angelique Kerber is No. 6.

Second-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia beat sixth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 7-5, 6-4 to reach the Connecticut Open semifinals in New Haven.

Seeking her ninth WTA Tour title, Cibulkova will face Belgium’s Elise Mertens on Friday in the U.S. Open tuneup event at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. Mertens advanced when China’s Zhang Shuai withdrew because of a right arm injury.

Top-seeded defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland beat eighth-seeded Shuai Peng of China 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday night. Radwanska will face Australia’s Daria Gavrilova, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens.

NHL: The Colorado Avalanche agreed to a two-year, entry-level deal with Alexander Kerfoot after the forward became a college free agent this month. Kerfoot was originally taken by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round of the 2012 draft. He was with the Coquitlam Express of the British Columbia Hockey League before playing for Harvard, where he spent the past four seasons.

College football: Vincent Testaverde, son of Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde, is leaving Miami. The younger Testaverde transferred to his father’s alma mater in January 2015, but never took a snap for the Hurricanes.

He was not among the top four quarterbacks on Miami’s depth chart: Malik Rosier, Evan Shirreffs, N’Kosi Perry and Cade Weldon.
