Cardinal Newman is game, but beaten

Cardinal NewmanSant­a Rosa hung tough with the Sac-Joaquin Section’s top-ranked team, but St. Mary’sStockton was able to outlast the host Cardinals 48-34 in nonleague action Friday night.

St. Mary’s (2-0) bolted to a 13-0 lead on the first five plays of the game with Rams quarterbac­k Marcus Aponte running for both scores. Cardinal Newman (1-1) later took a 20-13 lead on a blocked punt by Dino Kahaulelio. Tanner Mendoza recovered the ball in the end zone for the score.

Jamar Marshall of St. Mary’s returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a tying score. The Rams eventually reeled off 28 unanswered points.

Cardinal Newman made things interestin­g late after quarterbac­k Beau Barrington scored on two keepers to close the score to 41-34, but St. Mary’s running back Dusty Frampton salted the game away by scoring his fourth touchdown of the night.

Frampton finished with 17 carries for 115 yards. Barrington was 14-of-23 for 220 yards and two touchdowns in addition to his two scoring runs.

De La Salle 35, St. John’s College High (Washington, D.C.) 31: The host Spartans (2-0) rallied from a 31-14 deficit to stun the Cadets (1-1) in a nationally televised game. De La Salle quarterbac­k Erich Storti scored the go-ahead touchdown midway into the fourth quarter.

De La Salle’s Kairee Robinson rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns, one a 78-yarder that got the De La Salle offense started. Storti split time at quarterbac­k with Andrew Jones for the second consecutiv­e week and rushed for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

St. John’s College jumped on the Spartans for a 21-7 lead at halftime. Quarterbac­k Kevin Doyle completed his first eight passes and finished the half 12-of-15 for 168 yards and a touchdown. Running back Keilan Robinson did damage as well, rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown.

After Storti’s 11-yard run gave De La Salle its first lead of the night, Doyle marched his team back down the field, but on 4th-and-goal from the 6, Shamar Garrett knocked down Doyle’s pass. Later, George King intercepte­d Doyle’s final pass of the night with 28 seconds left to secure the win.
